How to Show File Extensions

In Windows XP, the file extensions are hidden - but you can chage this default configuration so that you are able to see the extensions. This is generally useful, because it provides you with more information about the files you have.
  1. First open Windows Explorer. You can do this by double-clicking on "My Computer", "My Documents", or on any other folder.
  2. At the top of the Explorer window, click Tools and then click Folder Options...
  3. In the Folder Options dialog that is shown, go to the View tab.
  4. Look under Advanced settings for an option that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck this option to be able to see the file extensions (if the option is already unchecked, this means that the file extensions are visible).
  5. Click OK to close the dialog and save the settings.
If you change your mind about showing the extensions, you can repeat the same steps, but making sure the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is checked - and this will hide the extensions again.
